Do-it-yourself Poker Tables

Poker tables are essential pieces of furniture in a casino or in the home of a die-hard poker fan. They can be of varying shapes like: circular, rectangular, hexagonal, and octagonal. Most poker tables come in fine hardwoods such as red oak and cherry and some are lacquered, hand-rubbed, and waxed for a more artistic and elegant look.

Poker has become hugely popular in recent years whether it is celebrity poker on TV, games at home, or online poker. Having a real poker table at home is a costly luxury. But you can always make one yourself for a stylish add-on to your living room and enjoy the popular game indoors. It is definitely a cheaper alternative to the expensive ready made poker tables.

When you consider building your own poker table, look for some great tips and ideas on the Internet. To begin with, you can make a rough pencil sketch of the shape of the table. Depending on where you would want to place the table, you can come to a decision regarding the dimensions. The shape and size of the table should give you a air estimation of the amount of wood needed and it is always advisable to buy some extra to make room for mistakes. Using a rectangular 6-foot lightweight folding table as your base is a great idea.

Hardwood or veneered construction plywood are the best for the tabletop and you would need to first make the framing. Once the frame pieces are properly screwed around the table, it is time to seal the tabletop and let it cure overnight. Sanding your table down and applying wood treatment are the final steps to having the perfect poker table you had imagined.

With a little research and creativity, you can build a poker table that fits your own style and budget. It is not always necessary to shell out big bucks when you can make a professional-quality poker table yourself. Most poker tables are especially made for eight players. Poker tables can be with legs in place or table tops that can be fitted to any classical table. The key is to choose the right color and wood stains for a poker table that blends the best with the game room’s décor.

Making the High Stakes Poker Jump

September 18th, 2009 | No Comments »
Posted by admin under Poker

Every poker player dreams of winning millions of dollars playing poker. Even if you are “not in it for the money”, you have still had to think about this more then once. There is a big difference between high stakes poker and low stakes poker. Just because you can dominate low stakes games does not mean that you will be successful playing high stakes poker. That is one thing that you have to understand before you think about making that jump. It doesn’t mean that you are not going to do well, but realize that there are differences.

The number one thing to realize is the difference in competition. Generally, the higher the stakes the better the players are. You are going to find more aggressive and just plain out tough players in higher stakes games. You have to wonder what they have done to get to that point. Either they are very rich, or they are very good at poker. If you are thinking about moving up to high stakes poker then you are probably pretty good yourself. Nobody is saying you cannot handle it, but if you think the competition is going to stay the same you are making a big mistake.

The Bankroll

You have to think about your bankroll before you even start to get the thought of playing high stakes poker. If you are really going to succeed with higher stakes games you must have a good bankroll. You should have at least 30 max buy-ins when you are playing a specific limit. So if you are going to play in a $3000.00 buy in game you should have a bankroll of $90,000.00. Do not think that just because you have gotten to $3000.00 that you should move up to a game that allows you to buy in for that much. That is the best way to lose all of your money very quickly.

Reconsider

Before you move up to higher limits you might want to reconsider and think about a few things first. If you are doing so well at the limits you are already at then why not stay at them? Just because you go up to higher limits, that doesn’t mean you are automatically going to make more money. A better thing to do would be to play multiple games at once. If you are already doing that and you think it is the right thing to do for you, then maybe moving up to higher limits is the way to go.

If you are already beating a game and making a lot of money at a specific limit, you should probably stay at that limit. Another thing you could consider is playing a couple of tables at your normal stakes and trying out a couple on the high stakes tables. That is a good way to test out the waters and see how you feel about it. If all goes well, then gradually move up until you are playing nothing but the high stakes.

You can look at it a couple of different ways. Either you could be making a big mistake by moving up and lose a lot of your bankroll or you could be missing out on a great opportunity by not taking that chance. At some point you have had to of moved up to get to the limits that you are at right now. If you never would have moved up you wouldn’t have gotten where you are today. Making that move to high stakes could completely change your outlook on the game for either the better or the worse.

Decoding online poker chat

Decoding online poker chat

If there is one thing that online poker is lacking when compared to real brick and mortar games, it is one’s inability to see and verbally communicate with other players. At a real card room, these visual and verbal cues are what players use to get the edge on their competition and put players on hands. In fact, many people still stay away from online poker because they feel at a disadvantage without these insights. Well, those people are missing out. Just because you can’t see your opponent at the online table doesn’t mean you can’t extract information on what they might do next. In fact, there are many ways to get the information you need about your competition while playing online.

One of the best ways to get information on a player, especially at the lower levels is to simply watch the chat box. While the chat box can be used as a source of information at the higher levels, it is not as consistent of a source and frankly it is used less in middle and high limit games. In terms of low limit games however, the chat box might as well be your real world view of the competition. Let’s analyze a few chat box behaviors that can provide valuable insight at the tables:

  • Chatty Kathy’s: Some people just never shut up and unfortunately that goes for poker players too. The good news however is that very few people can talk your ear off and play good poker. If you notice someone constantly talking, whether in the hand or not, you should take note that this could be a susceptible player. While some will use chat to confuse their opponents, these tacticians usually do it tactfully and don’t talk too often. Constant chatter is the best indicator that someone’s mind is on things other than poker, which is completely fine; maybe they are just there to have fun. If that’s the case though, make sure you punish them for it and take their money!
  • Silence: Some people never chat. This can be good and bad. Usually it is a pretty fair indicator of someone not interested in idol conversation and more interested in the game. These are the kind of people that won’t even respond if you tell them “good hand” or something similar. These players can be dangerous and you should take note that they may be savvy or experienced.
  • Poker related compliments and replies: These are the players that routinely compliment others on good hands or good plays or routinely reply when others do the same to them. Just because a player shows good poker chat etiquette (is there such a thing?) does not mean they are a great player. Take this information merely as an indication of some experience and realize you will have to study the player some more to extract useful information.

There are many other key things to watch for in the chat box as well. For example, sometimes players might get angry or aggressive with one another. You should relish in this and sit back and watch. This is the absolute best time to take them for a lot of money. In real life, you can tell someone is on tilt by their face and their demeanor. Online, just watch for people freaking out or getting mad at other players via chat. Players who do this are primed to make mistakes and play poorly. Use this short term advantage to outplay frazzled opponents who overplay or underplay hands.

The bottom line here is that the chat box is your window into the competition. A little phrase here or there can go along way and you need to pay attention to every little bit as to expose the most information about your opponents. Remember, poker is a game of small edges; you’ll need everyone you can get. Looking for advice on how you should handle the chat box? Mute yourself, sit back and watch the pots roll in.

Brain fitness: See what you believe

September 16th, 2009 | No Comments »

Our brain is perhaps one of the most sophisticated machines that can be ever designed. It is an amazing network of million of neurons which work relentlessly to process information. It is rather unfortunate that we pay so much attention on physical fitness but tend to ignore the importance of brain fitness. The brain games can prove really helpful in strengthening the muscles of our brain.

The brain is the supreme center which relays all the information through our sense organs. In fact it is this powerful machine which helps us to feel the various sensations of touch feel etc. One of the most important sensations that the brain empowers is vision. Our ability to see derives from a very well laid down information network between our eyes and the brain.

One of the most important functions enabled by our brain is the visual perception which involves an exchange of information between the eyes and the brain. However this special power can be hampered and result in a condition known as visual processing disorder which is a reduced ability to properly process information received through the eyes. This condition may result into short attention span, delayed motor perception ability and high level of frustration.

A common problem area related with visual perception disability is known as visual motor integration which is the inability to use visual cues to guide one’s movement. The people suffering from this condition are generally referred to as clumsy and tend to bump into things while walking. Poor visual integration can generally interfere with all the aspects of a person’s life including social, professional etc.

However, not all hope is lost. The above condition is rectifiable if proper steps are taken. Brain fitness can be achieved by visual perception training which helps to improve the coordination between the brain and the eye. It basically involves three steps viz:

Spatial relation: This is the ability to perceive an object with relation to other objects and helps in maneuvering oneself in a better manner.
Visual discrimination: This is the ability to differentiate between various objects based on specific attributes like size, shape, color etc.

Visual closure: The ability to identify an entire object when the full object cannot be seen.

Brain teasers and brain games can help to improve the hand eye coordination and thus assist in brain fitness. Mind360 offers brain fitness games. The website mind360.com provides complete information about the company and the online mind games.

One of the most important capabilities that a brain teaser provides is “Lateral Thinking”. It is term coined by Edward De Bono for finding solution to problems through an indirect and creative approach. It is basically about reasoning that may not be immediately obvious and can be derived only through a step by step approach. Lateral thinking has become the buzzword amongst corporate today and is helping them to expand their boundaries.

A few of the most common brain teasers include logic puzzle and riddles. A logic puzzles derives itself from the mathematical field of deduction and may include some of the world’s toughest puzzle which can be solved only by using logic puzzle grid. The most popular example of this is the Zebra puzzle. Surprisingly Lewis Carrol used logic puzzles in his famous book ”Alice In Wonderland”.

A riddle, on the other hand, is a statement having a veiled meaning and can be put forward as a puzzle to be solved. Riddles are basically of two types viz:

Enigmas: These are problems expressed in metaphorical language and require ingenuity in thoughts.

Conundrums: These are questions whose answers are somewhere hidden in the statement itself.

The brain teasers are surely a great way to keep you busy and in the process also utilize your Grey cells. Online mind games like bricks breaking and code breaking are a great way to entertain the kids and ensure that their mind receives just the right conditioning.

Your Poker Success is Not in the Cards: How to Peg the Pigeon at Your Table

September 12th, 2009 | No Comments »
Posted by admin under Poker

There’s a television show called Lie To Me, and every week viewers learn how to tell when someone is lying—voice level changes, certain body language, eye shifting, mouth twitches, tiny nuances of movement that indicate an intent to deceive. I’m pretty sure parents of teenagers and suspicious spouses are glued to the screen during every episode for obvious reasons. If you’re an aspiring poker player, you’ll be happy to know that you can identify the weakest player at the table with similar powers of observation, allowing you to, um, clean him out and gain a big chip advantage.

Pro poker player Rory Monahan says you can “spot the sucker” at your table within the first few hands. If you pay attention to Rory’s surefire giveaways, you’ll learn 1) how to spot the sucker and 2) how to avoid being the sucker. Here they are:

  1. Arrogance.  When a player keeps bragging, acting cocky and “talking trash,” it’s likely he or she is compensating for insecurities.
  2. Immediate Tilt. High-stakes poker is an intense game.  On tilt is the term for a state of mental confusion or frustration, during which a player becomes overly aggressive, which leads to less-than-optimal game play. If a player goes on tilt early in the game, you’ve got your patsy.
  3. Ham and Cheese. Commonly known as overacting, if a player gets dramatic with his or her bluffs, calls and holds, chances are you’ve got a weak player in your midst. They’re overcompensating for a lack of skill.
  4. World Series of Poker Syndrome. If you’ve ever watched TV’s World Series of Poker, you’ve probably noticed there’s heavy action on every hand. It’s called editing. For the show to fit into the allotted time, dozens of less-exciting hands are cut. If a player plays every pot, you can bet they’ve been watching the show instead of playing real Texas-Hold ‘Em.
  5. Showboating. Nobody likes a pompous winner. Players who grandstand after winning a hand are showing their lack of experience. Seasoned poker players know better than to make enemies of the other players. It’s amazing how quickly the showboating stops when all the showboater’s chips are gone.
  6. Fear of Risk. An experienced poker player is committed to the game—and to winning. If a player shows a fear of commitment by folding each time he or she is raised, you’ve found your mark—someone who doesn’t have the experience or the “guts” for the game.  Make these calls and watch your chips come in!

How to Play Poker Dice

September 11th, 2009 | No Comments »
Posted by admin under Poker

z

Poker Dice is the dice version of the card game Poker. You can purchase a special set of five dice made for playing this game, which has the Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, and 9 on them, or play the game with five regular dice. The following steps will show you how to play the dice game Poker.

Things You’ll Need:

  • 5 dice (poker dice or regular dice)
  • 2 or more players
  • Cup
  • Scorecard
  1. Step 1

Decide if you are playing the game with five poker dice or regular dice. If using regular dice, the 6 is substituted for the Ace, the 5 for the King, the 4 for the Queen, the 3 for the Jack, the 2 for the 10 and the 1 for the 9.

  2. Step 2

Go around the table and roll a die to see who goes first. High roll goes first and the order goes clockwise around the table. In case of a tie, everyone who ties rolls again.

  3. Step 3

Put all five dice in a cup and roll the dice if you are the first player.

  4. Step 4

After the first throw, put aside any dice you wish to keep and put the rest of the dice back into the cup and roll again. You may have up to three throws per turn or you can stop after the first or second throw.

  5. Step 5

Win the round if you have the highest roll after everyone has taken a turn. Hands are ranked as follows (listed highest roll to the lowest): five of a kind; four of a kind; full house (three of a kind and a pair); straight (five consecutive values–highest rolls in a straight beats a lower straight); three of a kind; two pairs; and one pair.

History of Poker

September 2nd, 2009 | No Comments »
Posted by admin under Poker

The exact history of poker is not known 100% . It probably comes from the French game ‘Poque, or from the German gamen’ Poche ‘(accurate). Poker also seems contrary to an old Persian game, named ‘as nas’, which the French had learned in New Orleans by Persian sailors. Clearly, these are all theories, because we don’t know precisely the history of poker. So it is rather a theory of war who is right, one against the other. Nevertheless, there is 1 theory which is best known, and is most used when the history of poker is explained. The theory is said that poker has to be a combination of the Renaissance game “Primero” and the French game ‘Brelan. One of the first reports written with evidence for the history of poker comes from the English actor Joseph Crowell. Crowell said that the was born in New Orleans in 1829 with a 20 card deck. Was also in a book written by Jonathan H. Green, that poker is down tremendously quickly spread and became known in the rest of the United States via for Mississippi riverboats where gambling was normal to kill time. Because poker grew on the Mississippi, it spread to the west. During the great gold rush was just as poker known as the ‘Gunfight’, which again is known in history.

When the poker game was well known game, the English came up with a 52-card deck, with the result that new poker hands were born “was like” Flush “. It was also during the American Civil War that poker has evolved further, so the game faced more faces then before. During the war, the games’ draw poker, stud poker, and the straight poker were introduced. The “Wild Card” came into play around 1875. And “lowball” and “Split-pot poker was in the beginning of the twentieth (20th) century introduced.

Poker Regimes in the day triggered a huge rush in the United States of America, especially the televised tournaments like the WSOP and the EPT. Of course the Internet with has many poker players entailed. In other words, a short and easy version of the history of poker.
